The country's weightlifters have more to work for.
Weightlifting has been given a new lease on life as the International Olympic Committee approved the sport's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
IOC President Thomas Bach announced the decision following reforms within the International Weightlifting Federation. Weightlifting has been plagued by doping and governance problems in the past.
"We could see the really robust anti-doping in place addressing our concerns," Bach said.
Hidilyn Diaz, the Philippines' first and only Olympic gold medalist so far, is elated with the news.
"Olympic weightlifting will remain as part of the modern Olympic movement," Diaz said in an Instagram story.
"Appreciation (to the) IWF leadership and all stockholders for the major turn-around on governance and transparency."
Diaz is a member of the IWF Athletes Commission which helped in the creation of the 2024-2031 IWF Strategic Plan.
While Diaz probably won't play in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the pride of Zamboanga City has been busy paving the way for the next generation of Filipino weightlifters.
Not looking that far ahead though, Diaz has her eyes set on the 2024 Paris Olympics targeting a second Olympic gold.
