From a young age, Angel Canino watched the Philippine women's national volleyball team with wide-eyed admiration.

Canino dreamt that one day she would also represent her country on the international stage, donning the national colors as part of the seniors team and playing with the same fervor as her idols.

Now, that dream is set to become a reality as the 20-year-old Canino prepares to see action for Alas Pilipinas in the upcoming AVC Challenge Cup, an opportunity she accepted in a heartbeat.

“I’m very happy. Siyempre thankful and at the same time blessed din. For the longest time, this has been my dream na makasama sa seniors kasi dati 21-under lang ‘yung highest na nasalihan ko sa national team. So, looking at them before, sabi ko sa sarili ko na one day, gusto ko nandiyan din ako,” the promising La Salle stalwart bared to One Sports.

“I’m very happy na I’ve reached this far na.”

As she opened another thrilling chapter to her blossoming career, Canino is glad to have her La Salle teammates in Thea Gagate and Julia Coronel by her side, whose presence has helped her adjust seamlessly to Alas Pilipinas.

Canino said their camaraderie and shared experience on and off the court have fostered a supportive environment, enabling her to adapt quickly and contribute effectively to the team.

“Sobrang nakakagaan kasi sobrang tagal ko na sila nakasama, so alam ko na po kung paano sila gumalaw. And siyempre naging teammate ko po sila, so meron akong kasama sa loob and outside the court talaga na makakausap ko,” the 5-foot-11 outside hitter shared.

“They will also lead me sa kung ano pang kulang ko. They will also tell me kung ano pang pwede kong iambag sa loob. I’m very happy that they’re here as my ate, and they’re here as my teammates as well.”

The chance to suit up for Alas Pilipinas also came at a vulnerable moment for Canino.

Nearly two months after a right forearm injury that sidelined her for weeks in April in the middle of the UAAP season, Canino admitted that she is still on the path to full recovery.

Nonetheless, her determination to carry the flag and country remains unwavering.

“Sa physical condition ko naman, I’m trying to be at my 101 percent. But you know, still recovering, but para sa Pinas ilalaban lahat,” Canino said.

“Basta para sa bayan, laban!”
