Julius Naranjo and Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz reflect on their efforts to shape the future of Filipino weightlifters through their academy, drawing a parallel to how Apo Whang-Od’s apprentices preserve her cultural impact.
Two extraordinary Filipinas. Two symbols of empowerment.
Julius Naranjo, weightlifting coach and husband of Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, captured a powerful moment in an Instagram post featuring Hidilyn alongside Apo Whang-Od, the legendary Filipino tribal tattoo artist, and her proud apprentice, Grace.
Describing the encounter as surreal, Julius expressed his admiration for the two women, both of whom have brought immense pride and inspiration to the nation through their respective expertise.
“Last week I had the chance to meet a living legend in @apowhangod and I was quickly reminded that I was actually with two living legends. One culturally and one through sports (@hidilyndiaz). Both women embody strength & empower beauty through their talents and achievements,” he shared.
Even as she reaches the twilight of her sporting career, Hidilyn continues to build her legacy by uplifting future champions through her Hidilyn Diaz Weightlifting Academy, creating opportunities for the next generation to pursue their dreams and carry the nation’s pride forward.
“Much like Grace is keeping Apo Whang Od’s tradition alive, I feel the same with what we are doing for grassroots here in the Philippines. I feel this sense of pride in giving back to the community and giving kids the opportunity to make something of their lives,” Julius further reflected.
The Hidilyn Diaz Weightlifting Academy has become a cornerstone for grassroots development in the Philippines, nurturing young athletes and introducing them to the sport of weightlifting.
By providing proper coaching, facilities, and guidance, the academy is empowering aspiring weightlifters to pursue their dreams, aiming to produce future champions who can continue to bring pride and honor to the country.
Together, these two women, through their individual talents and dedication to their crafts, continue to inspire and uplift, showing the power of passion, legacy, and community in shaping the future.
Their stories are a testament to the strength of Filipino women—those who not only break barriers but also pave the way for others to follow.
