Fresh off their bronze medal finish, Sydney Calderon is already making plans to build a new team in the Spikers' Turf.
Sydney Calderon is set to step away from her head coaching role to form a new team in Spikers’ Turf, with a vision of creating an inclusive squad that champions the LGBTQ+ community.
Currently at the helm of the Savouge Spin Doctors, Calderon led the team to back-to-back bronze medals after sweeping the VNS-Laticrete Griffins, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22, in Game 2 of the 2025 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig on Friday, April 4.
Following their bronze medal finish, Calderon shared with reporters about her plans for the upcoming months.
“This would be my last stint as head coach. You might be seeing me cheering my team from the other side or you might be seeing me play next season,” Calderon revealed.
Despite stepping down, the Savouge CEO remains committed to the sport and is already in talks to establish a new team with the help of tournament director Mozzy Ravena.
“We were actually talking with Ms. Mozzy, so planning ako magtayo pa ng isang team, which is empowering ‘yung LGBT. ‘Yun ‘yung pangarap ko and hopefully sana ma-approve ‘yun. Definitely, pag na-approve ‘yun, you might see me playing for the other team,” Calderon shared.
As for the coaching transition, Calderon assured that a new head coach would be in place for the Spin Doctors but hinted at remaining involved in some capacity.
“Not yet, but definitely, mag-i-interview ako ng mga possible head coach na papalit sa akin. If ever man may bago sa akin, I can still put myself as a head coach pero definitely ‘yung assistant coach ko ‘yung makikita niyo,” Calderon explained.
For now, Calderon and Savouge will be celebrating their back-to-back bronze medal finish.
“Masaya kasi second stint ko na as head coach. Na-defend namin and nakuha ulit namin 'yung bronze,” she said.
