The road to recovery will be long and hard. Ferrer won't mind.
This was going to be a critical preseason for Kevin Ferrer. Up and down in his time with the Terrafirma Dyip, Ferrer could’ve used the PBA On Tour to build momentum heading into Season 48, which will tip off in October with the Commissioner’s Cup.
Then, in just his second game for the Dyip, Ferrer crumpled like a heap, writhing in excruciating pain. And just like that, his PBA On Tour stint was cut abruptly short, ended by a torn Achilles that left the 6-foot-5 winger unable to walk on his own.
Just like that, the last fans will see of Ferrer on the court is of him being stretchered off it—helpless, seemingly in a daze, and staring at a most uncertain future.
Don’t be sorry for Ferrer, though. He’ll probably miss the entirety of Season 48 with Achilles injuries typically taking 9–12 months of recovery, but he’ll come back—perhaps stronger and better.
Ferrer’s road to recovery has even begun already. And, on Saturday, the two-time PBA champion with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel posted on Instagram a short video of him putting shots up in his own court—in a cast and all.
In his caption, he shared what is driving him in this most challenging of times: his love for the game.
“Kahit ano mang pagsubok na dumating sa buhay, walang makakapigil sa'yo sa paglalaro ng pinakamamahal mo,” Ferrer wrote on his Instagram.
The 30-year-old former UST Growling Tiger also had a message for everyone:
“I’m here, I’m not going anywhere. I’m just building my version 2.0.”
Version 2.0 will be a long time coming for Ferrer. But best believe he’ll do whatever it takes to once again play the game he so loves at the PBA level.
