These battles brought the best out of Captain Hook and the Saint.
Fireworks flew everywhere whenever Mac Cardona and Ronald Tubid went at it on the court during their PBA heydays.
From the outside looking in, fans saw two warriors at each other’s throat. Turns out, there’s another reason why these two always seemed an inadvertent elbow away from a melee.
In the latest video uploaded by PBA Motoclub, former Barangay Ginebra San Miguel star Jayjay Helterbrand bared he and partner Mark Caguioa always instructed Tubid to get on the former Talk ’N Text ace’s nerves.
“Kaya inuutusan namin si Ronald, ‘Asarin mo ‘yan, kailangan mawala si Mac.’ Kami nagbabayad ng fine ni Ronald,” Helterbrand said, drawing laughter from former PBA legends, including Cardona himself.
It was nothing personal of course. It was simply a ploy to take out the opposing team’s best player.
“Win at all cost bro. Siyempre kung sino [best player] ng kalaban, aasarin mo, tatanggalin mo,” he added.
This all started when Cardona, a flamboyant guard out of De La Salle Green Archers, was apparently trying out for a spot at Ginebra.
“Nag-tryout ako sa Ginebra bago mag-TNT. Pinagtitira ako niyan, binully ako pare,” Cardona said, pointing to a chuckling Helterbrand.
To which, the Fast responded: “Competitive kami. Siyempre papakita namin kela coach na hindi naman kailangan ‘yang mga yan.”
Safe to say, fans are glad it all happened. After all, it gave them one of the cutthroat battles the league has seen.
