First win means great deal to UE, says Khy Cepada

It’s only one win, but it meant a great deal to the University of the East Lady Warriors. It meant despite the overwhelming odds, the Lady Warriors will live up to their name and fight on.

That’s exactly what they did on Wednesday as they outlasted the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 16-25, 25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 15-12, in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

“Importante [‘yung win] kasi marami nagda-doubt sa ’min lalo sa socmed. Sabi po nila coach na gawin na lang pong inspiration… take po namin ‘yun mas mag pursigi pa,” said Khy Cepada, who finished with 19 points in UE's first win in 13 games.

Janine Lana shared a similar sentiment, saying the win shows that the team is only getting better.

“Paunti-unti po kaming umaangat. Step by step, kahit papano nanalo po kami,” said Lana, who delivered the finishing blow and ended up with 10 points.

Expect the Lady Warriors to parade the same fighting spirit when they take on powerhouse De La Salle University Lady Spikers in their final assignment.

Even when confronted with the tall task, literally and figuratively, UE remains unfazed.

“Alam namin na sila 'yung nandun sa taas, pero sabi ko nga wala pa ring mawawala if we play our best. Who knows. Bilog naman bola,” said coach Jumbo Dimaculangan.

“Kahit number 1 ‘yan sa standing, malay mo makapuwing kami. Hindi naman pwede sabihing La Salle, susuko na agad kami… hindi ka man manalo at least nilaban mo.”
