UAAP: Adamson overcomes UP's endgame challenge, completes sweep

UAAP: Adamson overcomes UP
The Adamson Lady Falcons pick themselves up after a first game setback as they beat University of the Philippines in the UAAP season 86 women's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Adamson needed four match points to down University of the Philippines, 25-22, 25-22, 28-26, in the UAAP season 86 women's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The Lady Falcons looked poised for a sweep as they led 18-14 in the third set but had to thwart the Fighting Maroons who mounted a late challenge.

Ishie Lalongisip led AdU with 12 points while also contributing on the defensive end with 16 excellent digs. Mayang Nuique and AA Adolfo added 11 markers apiece.

The Lady Falcons thus barged into the win column after succumbing to defending champion La Salle, 16-25, 16-25, 18-25, last Saturday, Feb. 17.

AdU moved to joint third with University of the East and Far Eastern University with their identical 1-1 slates.

The Fighting Maroons, meanwhile, absorbed their second loss in as many games.

Adu lost grip of its four-point edge, 18-14, in the third set as UP knotted the count at 20-all. It turned into a seesaw battle from there, with Irah Jaboneta gifting the Lady Falcons their first match point, 24-23, on a crucial attack error.

Jaboneta atoned for it in the next to tie the count, but another miscue by Jewel Encarnacion gave AdU another set point.

The San Marcelino-based squad stared at two more set points from there on a hit by Lalongisip and a running attack by Nuique for a 27-26 edge.

The Lady Falcons nearly wasted another opportunity as Nina Ytang answered with an attack for the Fighting Maroons to initially force another standoff.

The hit turned out to be an error, however, as it was ruled as a net touch following a successful video challenge by AdU.

Ytang paced UP with a game-high 18 points.
