Beyond the epic match-ups in the UAAP tournaments, there's quite some hype coming from the opening ceremonies, where the performers bring the party.

The University of the Philippines is kicking off Season 87 with a bang, featuring the iconic Eraserheads and the Battle of Katipunan.

Before we dive into classics like ‘Alapaap,’ ‘Ligaya,’ and ‘Magasin,’ let’s take a trip down memory lane to see the legendary performers and big names who have set the stage on fire in recent UAAP opening ceremonies.

Minzy from 2NE1

Did you know a K-pop star totally rocked the UAAP stage in 2018? Minzy from 2NE1 set the place on fire when she kicked off the star-studded UAAP Season 81.

James Reid

Who can forget James Reid? It wasn’t just the cute athletes making us all mushy—this hunk of a Filipino actor totally stole the show at the UAAP Season 81 opening ceremony.

James in the opening game be like: Game na ba? Ano na? Sure na ba? Oo na. Wala nang bawian, mamatay man, period, no erase. Kidding!

Sponge Cola

Wala nang nakapagtataka on why Sponge Cola was invited during the UAAP Season 81 opening ceremony, as this OPM band is truly bringing all the hype for all the kolehiyos and kolehiyalas, and nostalgia for all the UAAP legends!

Stephen Curry

Did you know the newly-minted Olympic gold medalist Stephen Curry once graced the UAAP stage? He led the oath of sportsmanship with all the team captains from each UAAP school during the Season 81 opening ceremony.

Sponge Cola, Karylle, The Itchyworms, Autotelic, IV of Spades, Inigo Pascual, and Ylona Garcia

Even though Season 82 was cut short because of COVID, Ateneo made up for it by kicking off and wrapping up the season with some serious star power.

The opening featured a killer lineup of OPM bands like Sponge Cola, Karylle, The Itchyworms, Autotelic, and IV of Spades.

The closing ceremony was simpler--with the whole thing viewed online. Still, there was plenty of shine there with Inigo Pascual and Ylona Garcia. Sponge cola and The Itchyworms returned as well, bringing the curtains down in style by rocking the UAAP Season 82 official anthem, "Ang Ating Pangarap."

With UAAP Season 87 opening just around the corner, it’s gonna be epic to see the legendary OPM band Eraserheads reunite and give back to their alma mater, the University of the Philippines.

Catch it all this Saturday, September 7, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. It will be aired on One Sports, the UAAP Varsity Channel, and the Pilipinas Live app.
