Iconic Filipino rock band Eraserheads treated the UAAP community to a concert of their biggest hits to conclude an electrifying program during the opening ceremonies of UAAP Season 87 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.

The Eraserheads, who began their journey as musicians in host school University of the Philippines, performed renditions of their hit songs like “Alapaap”, “Minsan”, and “Ang Huling El Bimbo” in what lead singer Ely Buendia revealed to be their first performance at the Big Dome.

The band performed a total of seven songs to spark nostalgia among the band’s fans young and old. This was the Eraserheads’ first national TV reunion in recent years.

Leading up to their anticipated mini-concert were performances from several UP groups and alumni including the UP Concert Chorus, UP Kontra-GaPi, UP Symphony Orchestra, and dance group UPeepz. Chorale members from the different member schools also joined the UP Concert Chorus in a performance of the UAAP hymn.

Also delighting the fans were girl group Kaia, and select members of OPM bands Moonstar88, Slapshock, and Franco.

UP alums Lean Ansing of Slapshock, Bon Sundiang and Maysh Baay of Moonstar88, as well as Dave Delfin of Franco connived to become “Maroon 4” in the opening ceremonies.

The student-athletes were also thrust into the spotlight with the Parade of Athletes. UP swimmer and UAAP Season 86 athlete of the year Quendy Fernandez led the Oath of Sportsmanship.

UP President and UAAP Board Chairman Atty. Angelo Jimenez highlighted the impact of the UAAP in Philippine sports – calling the league one of the most popular sporting products the country has to offer.

“From its promising beginnings almost a century ago, the UAAP has become what it is today — the most popular college sporting franchise,” he said during his remarks.

The one-hour and a half program kicked off the new UAAP season which will feature host school UP going up against perennial rival Ateneo in the opening game Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

This will be aired on One Sports, the UAAP Varsity Channel, and the Pilipinas Live app.
