UE’s defensive specialist Angelica Reyes talks about keeping themselves grounded amid everything that happened in the offseason surrounding the Lady Warriors.
The UE Lady Warriors are perhaps the biggest victims of a whirlwind offseason which saw the departure of a number of their key players, led by last year’s rookie sensation Casiey Dongallo, Kizzie Madriaga, and Gelai Gajero.
But even if they were faced with unexpected challenges so close to the start of UAAP Season 87, which also saw their former coach Obet Vital join forces with UP, the Lady Warriors are holding their ground.
Now with no expectations on their season, UE libero Angelica Reyes said that the team is focused on getting themselves together.
With everything that’s happening outside of their control, she said they’re simply believing in the skills that they have left to prepare them for their upcoming battles.
“Yung preparation po namin, kasi biglaan din po eh. Bigla yung lineup namin nag-change, yung coaches namin, nag-change then siguro, minsan may part din na natanggap na namin yung nangyari so nagiging madali na rin samin na nandito pero still adjusting,” Reyes told One Sports during the UAAP Media Day.
As for the outside news, which include even the sympathetic opinions after the Lady Warriors were left wanting for key players, Reyes said that they’re going into the season with modest goals.
Faced with challenges that other teams might have crumbled under, UE just wants to make it through in one piece.
And still with the likes of Reyes and Khy Cepada leading the way, there is still promise surrounding the team.
“Hindi namin masyado iniisip yung distractions, and yung focus namin naniniwala kami kung ano yung meron samin ngayon knowing na kami yung nasa loob ng court and yung lineup ngayon is magkakasama na since mga first year pa kami,” said Reyes.
“Ang focus namin talaga is to goal na makapaglaro ng maayos, mairaos namin this season kasi sobrang… maraming news, maraming adjustments na nangyari. So, medyo mahirap. Nakakafocus naman po kami,” she added.
