The FEU Lady Tamaraws secured a season sweep of the UST Golden Tigresses after a four-set victory to open their second-round campaign in UAAP Season 87.
The FEU Lady Tamaraws scored a bounce back win at the expense of the UST Golden Tigresses after they staved off last year’s finalists in four sets, 25-22, 26-24, 17-25, 26-24, in their second round encounter of UAAP Season 87 on Sunday.
After a hapless showing against La Salle in their first round closer, the Lady Tamaraws denied UST’s comeback try from two sets down with a pivotal scoring run in the fourth set. Initially being down by six points, 10-16, at the second technical timeout, FEU's finishing kick proved to be much stronger than that of the Golden Tigresses.
Stumbling in set 3, FEU completed the win thanks to big games from Faida Bakanke and Gerz Petallo.
Bakanke, in particular, scored back-to-back points which put FEU ahead late, 23-22.
Though UST would be the first to set point after an Angge Poyos attack and an FEU error, the Lady Tams finished the game on a 3-0 scoring blitz to seize the victory in four sets.
Jean Asis blocked Reg Jurado at match point to help FEU improve to 5-3.
Likewise, UST also now touts a 5-3 slate.
Bakanke paced FEU with 22 points, while Petallo had an all-around game of 12 points, 15 excellent digs, and seven excellent receptions in the victory.
Jaz Ellarina also had 12 points in the win for the Lady Tamaraws.
Jurado topscored for UST with 20 markers, while Poyos had a triple-double with 14 points, 19 excellent digs, and 16 excellent receptions.
UST has now lost of back-to-back games — the team's first losing skid this season.
