It's been almost a decade since he last handled the Philippine men's national football team.
Hans Michael Weiss, who coached the Philippine men’s football team from 2011 to 2013, is back at the helm for the nationals.
Weiss’ initial tour of duty included 44 matches in two years and was marked by relative success, at least in the region, as he helped guide the Azkals to a third-place finish in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup, as well as a semifinal appearance in the 2012 AFF Championship. In all, the well-travelled German piloted the Azkals to 21 wins, 11 draws, and 12 losses.
The 58-year-old veteran will get to work immediately upon his return as he will already be manning the pitch in the Azkals’ friendlies versus Nepal on June 15 and against Chinese-Taipei on June 19, both to be played at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
“We are delighted to welcome coach Weiss back to the PHI MNT,” said Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta. “He has kept the Philippines close to his heart and continues to be a well-respected figure by players and staff.”
Weiss will be working on 26-man pool led by veteran goalie Neil Etheridge.
After his initial stint as Azkals coach, Weiss went to Romania where he coached first division club Otelul Galati. He subsequently handled the men's football teams of Mongolia and Laos.
