Why not train a Filipino fighter?
Such was the sentiment of Filipino boxing fans on the heels of Manny Pacquiao's decision to train Ukranian and social media influencer Vladimir Grand.
This is the first time the eight-division champion will take an apprentice under his wing. But this didn’t sit well with not a few fans.
When asked about it on Thursday, Pacquiao had a simple explanation.
“Nagshe-share tayo ng kaalaman natin sa boxing sa mga Pilipino rin. Nagkataon lang din na lumapit 'to, nagpapatulong,” he said in a report on Frontline Pilipinas.
On Wednesday, the Filipino pugilist announced he will personally train Grand, who is based in the Philippines.
“Gusto ko i-share sa kaniya mga strategy na alam ko sa boxing para naman matuto siya at pag lalaban siya ng YouTuber din e magandang fight,” he said.
How this "grand" experiment plays out is anyone's guess.
