Availability has been a perennial problem for the Philippine national teams across all major sports.

Azkals are not spared from it.

For various reasons like injuries, some players needed to beg off from national team duties. That’s why returning Azkals coach Michael Weiss had to activate Stephan Shrock, who announced his retirement six months ago.

Shrock saw action, albeit sparingly, in the team’s 1-0 win over Nepal in a friendly match on Thursday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The big question looms, though: Will the fans see more of the former Azkals skipper?

“I think so. He will build his body up. He still has the drive to play,” said Weiss.

Weiss said a player of Schrock’s caliber still has a place for the team.

“With more fitness he can be a game-changer in crucial games and crucial situations. I don’t consider him top much as a starter anymore, but he can help us,” he said.

“You need players like this because now we’re going to the qualifiers. We need people with substance to go through these games and he’s one of them.”
