She made a good account of herself in the FIFA Women's World Cup.
Jessika Cowart was an integral part of the Filipinas in their laudable run in their maiden stint in the FIFA Women's World Cup last month. With her solid play as a defender, she garnered the attention of foreign clubs.
Now, she will pack her bags to the Land Down Under after Perth Glory signed her for the upcoming season of the A-League Women. The squad announced it on Tuesday with a media release.
The 23-year-old Cowart said she had multiple discussions with coach Alex Epakis and his staff before arriving at her decision.
“I was impressed with their commitment not only to us as players on the field, but also as people off the field, and that is a big reason why I signed for Glory," said Cowart. “I am highly impressed by the environment that has been built and it’s clear to me that this is a top organization and I’m honored to be a part of it."
The Filipinas' impressive showing in the FIFA Women's World Cup truly turned heads and Cowart is the latest national team member to get an offer from an international club following the earlier signings of Angela Beard, Olivia McDaniel, and Chandler McDaniel.
“Jess was a player who stood out to me during my time with the Philippines national team at the Women’s World Cup,” said Epakis, describing Cowart as an "ideal addition" and someone who has a "great tactical understanding of the game."
It's worth noting that former Filipinas coach Alen Stajcic was also signed by Perth Glory in the A-League Men.
Cowart will face Filipinas teammates Sarina Bolden and Jaclyn Sawicki in the A-League Women, as they suit up for Western Sydney and Western United, respectively.
Last season, Perth Glory finished in sixth place with an 8-6-4 win-loss-draw record.
“The A-League is growing fast and furious and is a very competitive league. I hope to not only represent Perth well throughout the season but also to help bring home a championship," said Cowart.
