Alex Eala’s impressive run at the WTA Canberra International ended in the semifinals after a hard-fought 5-7, 2-6 loss to China’s Wei Sijia on Friday, January 3 in Australia.

Eala battled fiercely in the opening set, taking a 5-4 lead before Wei surged to claim the next three games and the set.

In the second set, Wei dominated early, racing to a 5-0 lead before Eala managed to secure two games to momentarily reignite her chances.

However, the 21-year-old Wei proved unstoppable, sealing her spot in the finals against Japan’s Aoi Ito.

Eala’s journey to the semifinals included wins in the qualifiers over Australian locals Catherine Aulia and Alana Subasic, followed by dominant performances against Austria’s Sinja Kraus and the Netherlands’ Arianne Hartono.

She also overcame Australia’s Taylah Preston in a gritty quarterfinal showdown.

Eala sets her sights on the 2025 Australian Open qualifiers next week, aiming to secure her first-ever entry into a Grand Slam women’s main draw.
