Filipina boxer Hergie Bacyadan is set to represent not only her country, but also the LGBTQ+ community at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Bacyadan, who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community, has always been motivated by a promise she made to her parents when she was growing up.

Her commitment to making her family proud has been a driving force in her athletic career. In every competition she enters, Bacyadan carries their hopes and prayers with her.

"Sobrang every time na pupunta ako ng mga competition, lagi ko silang tinatawagan na eto na, maglalaro na ulit ako, so pag-pray niyo ako,” said Bacyadan.

Bacyadan’s path to the Olympics has been marked by significant milestones. Initially making a name for herself in Vovinam, she transitioned to boxing with the goal of competing on the world’s biggest stage.

At the 2nd World Qualification Tournament in Thailand, the 29-year-old Bacyadan secured her spot for Paris 2024 by winning a unanimous decision against Venezuela’s Maryelis Yriza in the women’s 75-kg category.

Despite facing challenges and adapting to the intricacies of boxing, Bacyadan’s hard work and dedication have paid off.

But Bacyadan’s journey is about more than her personal achievements; it’s about breaking stereotypes and inspiring others.

Bacyadan’s pride in her identity and her determination to succeed have made her a role model for many, as she continuously encourages others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.

And as Paris 2024 arrives, Bacyadan looks to make history for the Philippines and the LGBTQ+ community.
