Day 1 of the 2024 PVL Draft Combine saw several draftees impress coaches and officials who were present at the Gameville Ball Park in Mandaluyong City on Tuesday, June 25.
Several prospective PVL rookies made quite the impression on Day 1 of the PVL Draft Combine held at the Gameville Ball Park in Mandaluyong City on Tuesday, June 25.
Former De La Salle University setter Julia Coronel, Brock University libero Aleiah Torres, and University of Santo Tomas spiker Pierre Abellana stood out by topping some of the skills tests lined up during the workout.
Each draft candidate underwent body measurements as well as tests for strength, jumping ability, speed and agility, anaerobic capacity, and speed endurance.
Coronel stood out with her leaping skills, achieving the highest standard vertical jump at 27.78 inches. She also placed second in both the vertical jump with approach (316.0 cm) and the standing broad jump (248.9 cm).
Torres likewise excelled in several tests, achieving 50 reps in the one-minute pushup and the fastest modified agility T-test time at 5.98 seconds.
Abellana, on the other hand, performed well with 43 pushups, a 25.0-inch standing vertical jump, and a 60m shuttle run time of 14.35 seconds.
Thea Gagate, expected to be the first overall pick by ZUS Coffee, led in height (189 cm), wingspan (185 cm), and topped the vertical jump with approach at 317.0 cm.
Adamson University setter Angelica Alcantara recorded the fastest time in the 60-meter shuttle run, finishing in 14.01 seconds.
The inaugural rookie draft will take place on July 8 at Novotel Ibis Styles in Cubao, Quezon City.
Earlier in the day, 11 free agents also showcased their skills in the hopes of signing with a PVL team.
Former Strong Group spiker Mer Jauculan stood out in five of the six tests, including 50 pushups in one minute, a 32.18-inch standing vertical jump, and a 265 cm standing broad jump.
The 5-foot-6 Jauculan also recorded a 6.67-second modified agility T-test and a 14.34-second 60-meter shuttle run.
Other participating free agents included Judith Abil, Jan Cane, Chumcee Caole, Lhara Clavano, Dana Del Rosario, Cathrina Dizon, Sheeka Espinosa, Elaine Juanillo, Pia Sarmiento, and Menchie Tubiera.
Day 2 will feature all draft hopefuls and free agents competing in scrimmage matches.
The inaugural rookie draft will take place on July 8 at Novotel Ibis Styles in Cubao, Quezon City.
