The UAAP on Wednesday officially named former student-athlete Xavy Nunag as commissioner of the basketball tournaments for Season 86.

Nunag took the reigns of commissioner of the boys' tournament in the previous season when Dickie Bachmann was appointed as chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission.

Now with a bigger role, the UAAP expects nothing less than excellence from Nunag.

"His experience as a student-athlete, coach, and entrepreneur uniquely positions him to steer the UAAP basketball tournaments towards excellence," the UAAP said in a statement.

Nunag thanked the UAAP for its "continued trust and support."

"We are committed to making UAAP Season 86 an unforgettable experience for fans, student-athletes, and all stakeholders," he said in a statement.

Nunag played for the UP Fighting Maroons from the late 1990s to the early 2000s and also served as coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles' high school squad.

During the offseason, Nunag and his team personally visited each of the eight member schools to engage in discussions about new rules and regulations for Season 86, which will tip off on Saturday.

"One aspect of my role was to visit all the teams so that we could establish a common understanding of the rules. This way, if players or coaches have any questions, they can be clarified early on," said Nunag.
