Far Eastern U flexed its muscle as it hacked out a straight-set 25-23, 25-21, 25-18 victory against University of the Philippines in the UAAP season 86 women's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Gerzel Petallo starred for the Lady Tamaraws as she launched 12 attacks to go with four blocks for a team-best 16 points. Chenie Tagod added 12 markers while Jean Asis and Faida Bakanke combined for 13 points to backstop Petallo.

Tin Ubaldo orchestrated FEU's offense with 14 excellent sets on top of her own five attacks and two aces.

Meanwhile, Nina Ytang contributed 14 points for UP, while Jewel Encarnacion added 11.

The Lady Tamaraws came out firing in the first set, zooming to 14-5 lead on their balanced attack, but had to fend off the Fighting Maroons who crawled their way back to eventually knot the score at 23-all.

Petallo, however, was quick to retaliate with two straight points to seal the opener for FEU.

In the second set, the Lady Tamaraws tightened up their defense at the net, coming up with five blocks to help them get a 2-0 advantage.

FEU did not allow UP to recover in the third as it completed the sweep.

The Lady Tamaraws thus joined opening day winners La Salle and University of the East.
