Aside from the heart-pounding games, we will definitely also cherish all the humorous moments from the first round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments,
Remember those times in your university when the whole block was crammed with piles of paperwork, with deadlines after deadlines, and you were considered “lucky” if you could afford to sleep for at least an hour?
But then a classmate of yours maakes a joke, and just like that, your classroom is filled with laughter.
The first round of the #UAAPSeason86 men's and women’s volleyball tournaments certainly had that same college feel.
While the first round of the collegiate volleyball season is definitely one for the books for the quality games, it is also memorable for some laugh-out-loud moments.
Before we head on to a surely intense second round, let’s relive the top six funny moments in round 1.
1. Detdet’s favorite songWhen asked about her go-to song before a game, UST Golden Tigresses captain Bernadett Pepito answered, “Boom Tarat Tarat” by Willie Revillame, making sure the shenanigans were in full swing before the games event started. Well, it seems like the song is working wonders, as the UST leads the women’s volleyball standings with a flawless 7-0 record.
Thanks po, Kuya Wil!
2. Baby, Baby Kalma by Coach Edddieson OrculloWho says coaches have to be serious all the time? Head coach Eddieson Orcullo knows how to balance his sense of humor and leadership for the FEU Tamaraws, and the crowning example was his viral reminder during their game against UST.
True enough, the Tamaraws were cool, calm, and collected when they beat the Tiger Spikers in five thrilling sets.
3. Supportive Ates FTW!
Whenever the UST Golden Spikers and the DLSU Lady Spikers face off, it brings a different kind of anxiousness and excitement for the volleyball fans. That feeling was especially to the former UST captains, Sisi Rondina and Eya Laure. In their Instagram stories, they went into full fangirl mode as they watched the nail-biting five-setter between the two squads in the marquee game of round 1.
Aren’t we all like that?
Same Sisi and Eya, same.
4. Seminar with Manny Pacquiao by Coach Kungfu Reyes.
Alexa, play Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas.
Just like coach Eddieson, coach Kungfu’s pep talk during this timeout was also remarkable in balancing humor and guidance. During the UST’s game against the UP Fighting Maroons, coach Kungfu reminded his young squad to strengthen their defense, while lightening the mood at the same time.
“Dumadaan ang bola sa atin, sige ang ilag natin. Grabe ang ilag natin, parang boksingero ang ilag, eh. Baka mag-seminar sa’yo si Senator Manny [Pacquiao] niyan” lectured Coach Kungfu.
5. ANGGEling pala niya ha? Sakalin na ‘yan!
The UST Golden Tigresses are known for their asaran-type of bonding. When rookie Angge Poyos was announced as Player of the Game with her 26 points against the Ateneo Blue Eagles, team captain Detdet Pepito jokingly choked Angge in a light post-game moment.
ANGGEling kasi masyado, eh!
6. Who's your bet? Bella vs. Detdet
In a hypothetical libero showdown, who’s side are you on? Bella Belen or Detdet Pepito?
With her floor defense on the rise, former ROY-MVP Bella Belen jokingly challenged her long-time friend, UAAP Season 85 Best Libero Detdet Pepito, in a libero showdown.
“Kasi po sa training pa lang, ang naka-mindset kasi talaga sa’kin, dapat, ‘yong depensa namin is maganda. For me, para mapaganda ‘yon, [kailangan] is [mapakita] ko sa team ko na kaya naman namin, na kaya naman ng bawat isa sa amin na dumepensa nang maganda, na maging consistent. Laban po kami ni Detdet [Pepito]. Charot! ‘Di po ako papatalo kay Detdet! ” said Bella.
And of course, the feisty Tigress won’t back down. She answered back to Bella in a One Sports interview.
“Ang masasabi ko lang sa’yo, Belen, kung depensahan mo, lalaban ako! ” said Detdet.
It looks like it’s going to be an explosive round 2 rematch between the NU Lady Bulldogs and the UST Golden Spikers.
All jokes aside, all teams definitely poured out their best in the first round of the UAAP Season 86 volleyball tournaments. We cannot wait to witness what comes ahead in their upcoming round 2 matches.
