UAAP CDC Technical Head explains judging criteria for Season 87 competition set on December 1.
The UAAP is expected to employ the same criteria for judging in the upcoming UAAP Season 87 Cheerdance Competition slated on Sunday, December 1, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
In the spirit of being consistent, UAAP CDC Technical Head Paula Nunag said that the rubrics will focus on both aspects of cheer skills and dance, with four judges each set to focus on the individual skill set of the routine.
“Now what we can expect is basically from last year kasi, you already saw the routines they had, the eight teams. The criteria will be the same. As it has been for the last couple of years.” said Nunag.
“It will be stunting, the pyramids, then you have tumbling, then you’ll have tosses. So those are the specific cheer skills that we will be looking for and one judge will judge each of those categories… Because it is cheerdance, there will be four judges also who will be judging the dance portion,” she added, noting that the dance portion will include choreography, transition, spacing, and genres.
With the eight judges coming from respected positions in their fields, Nunag said that she is looking forward to seeing elite performances from each of the teams.

“For me, the key thing or the exciting thing about cheerdance, year in and year out, is because inspiration can come from anywhere. So you do not know right? What these teams have really worked on for us on Sunday,” she said.
“So with their boundless energy, endless athleticism… I’m really looking forward to being wowed and also of course, to be pleasantly surprised in terms of what the teams have come up with. Not only with their artistry, their musicality, but also in terms of their athleticism,” she continued.
To add to the legitimacy of the scoring, the cheer judges in particular will be International Cheer Union certified.
Understanding that the UAAP has the responsibility of promising teams a fair and balanced competition, Nunag said that they are continuing to improve on how to score and decide in the collegiate competition.
As the athletes themselves aim to improve year by year, Nunag believes that the technical committee must also push to ensure quality competition.
“So, in terms of what can be expected it’s that — making sure that we are all elevating our game, but at the same time ensuring that the quality is there and that everybody has fun and all the hard work of the teams are all really looked at and scrutinized to make sure that the judging is fair and all of the effort that they put into their routines are considered when coming up with the final scores.” said Nunag.
The UAAP CDC will feature all eight member teams and will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
