It was a different result this time around for Pinoy gymnast Carlos Yulo in his second Olympic stint.

After a disappointing run in Tokyo 2020, Yulo turned things around in Paris 2024 after advancing to the finals of the floor exercise, vault, and all-around.

Yulo finished second in the floor exercise qualifiers with 14.766 points. He came in sixth in the vault after earning a score of 14.683.

Including his performances in the other apparatuses, Yulo placed ninth among other gymnasts with a total of 83.631 points in individual all-around.

More than achieving redemption in the qualifiers, the 24-year-old Olympian said he was simply happy to be able to do his routines without any injuries or mishaps.

“Sobrang grateful and sobrang saya na healthy, walang injury, and nagawa ko 'yung mga dapat kong gawin,” Yulo told Paris 2024 correspondent Boom Gonzalez.

“May mga mistakes din sa performance ko, pero hindi na 'yun nagma-matter sa'kin right now. Nakapasok akong finals, nagawa ko 'yung floor ko and 'yung vault ko. Naitawid ko,” he added.

Yulo, though, admitted that he decided not to gamble his performances in the qualifications. He explained that their goal was simple—to make it to the finals.

“Goal lang talaga today ay makapasok sa all-around finals and sa floor of course. Binabaan ko rin 'yung floor ko para sure and safety na hindi ko i-gamble 'yung all-around ko rin.. Siyempre, safe na makapasok sa finals. Ayun 'yung ginawa ko today,” Yulo emphasized.

“Overall, wala naman akong inisip na number [na makuha] basta makapasok sa finals and then let's see sa finals kung anong mangyari,” he added.

After finishing the floor exercise, Yulo let out a huge roar, which he explained was a huge sigh of relief.

This ultimately paved the way for a calmer Yulo, who secured a spot in the finals of the men's artistic gymnastics individual all-around.

“Kinakabahan ako nung first kaya talaga napasigaw ako kasi sobrang intense talaga. And nung natapos talaga ako, ayun 'yung naging pakiramdam ko parang kailangan ko siya isigaw talaga,” said Yulo.

“Nabigla ako [kasi] grabe sobrang daming tao pero after talaga kasi nung floor ko, medyo nag-die down 'yung pagkakaba ko so dun na medyo nakokontrol ko na 'yung galaw ko and 'yung performance na ginawa ko,” he added.

Caloy made another yell of satisfaction after a clean performance with the horizontal bar--the final apparatus of the qualification.
