Nesthy Petecio is close to grabbing another Olympic medal after defeating French boxer Amina Zidani in the round of 16 in the women's featherweight division inside the North Paris Arena on Saturday, August 3 (Philippine time).

Petecio won the bout by points, 4-1, in the judge's scorecards, with one judge scoring 30-27 and the other two scoring 29-28.

After a tentative first round, the Tokyo 2020 silver medalist used her Olympic experience to her advantage, landing sharp blows that secured her the crucial second round.

Despite facing the home crowd, Petecio seemingly dominated Zidani in the third, landing several combination punches which ultimately guaranteed her advancement into the next round.

In Tokyo 2020, Petecio lost to Japan hometown bet Sena Irie in the gold medal match. In the Paris 2024 round of 16 against a French foe, the Filipina showed just enough to clear doubts.

Petecio will now await the winner between the bout of China’s Xu Zichun and Columbia’s Valeria Arboleda Mendoza.
